Sturminster Newton Walks

Sturminster Newton - 'Town Bridge' over River Stou

'Town Bridge', Sturminster Newton

There are two walks based on Sturminster Newton. The main (longer) walk is a pretty circular walk in the Stour Valley, passing through meadows and woodland and taking in an old manor house and mill in the village of Fiddlefoot, as well as Sturminster Newton’s 17th-century bridge and mill. There are several fine viewpoints along this walk. The second, shorter, walk follows the route of the main walk before looping back to town via the disused track of the old Somerset and Dorset Railway.

Both walks start and end in the centre of Sturminster Newton (grid reference ST 786140). Use OS Explorer map 129 or Landranger 194.

Going: The main walk involves several gradual ascents/descents (Moderate), whilst the shorter walk is mainly flat (Easy).

Distances: Main walk - approximately 4.6 miles (7.4 Km). Shorter walk – approx. 2.5 miles (4 Km).

Sites worth visiting: Sturminster Newton Museum (located in Old Market Cross House, in town); Fiddlefoot Manor (English Heritage, free admission); Sturminster Newton Mill.
