Dorset Pub Walks

A series of scenic walks in Dorset

Weymouth to Portland

Rodwell Trail Bridge, Weymouth

The Rodwell Trail, Weymouth

To date, this is the only non-circular walk on this site. It was inspired, in part, by an episode of the BBC series 'Railway Walks' with Julia Bradbury - for much of this walk's length it follows the route of the old quarry railway between Portland and Weymouth. The route initially follows a 'hidden' trail (the 'Rodwell Trail') through the southern outskirts of Weymouth before crossing the narrow stretch of land linking Portland to the mainland. The last stretch of the walk climbs to the top of Castletown before following the eastern side of Portland.

The walk starts near the northern end of the A353 road bridge over the River Wey in Weymouth (grid reference SY 676796) and finishes in the village of Easton on Portland (grid reference SY 693718). You can get a bus back to Weymouth from the end of the walk. Use OS Explorer map OL15.

Going: Relatively easy - there are a series of gradual climbs on Portland.

Distance: 7.8 miles (12.5 Km).

Pubs: There is a pub at the end of the walk in Easton on Portland and several in Weymouth.
